What Is The Study?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that results in pain, stiffness, and swelling of the joints. It can lead to joint damage, deformity, and the loss of joint function, if left untreated. The pain caused by Rheumatoid Arthritis may also be hard on people mentally and emotionally. There is no cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis and RA affects people differently. The first course of treatment for RA is the prescribing of corticosterioids and Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs). These treatments don’t work for all patients, so it’s important that researchers continue to seek out potential new interventions for people with the condition.
Arthritis NZ says a balanced diet will give energy, strengthen the immune system, and promote bone and tissue health. Latest research suggests that newly diagnosed Rheumatoid Arthritis patients or those at risk of progression are more likely to have gut dysbiosis – gut bacteria overgrowth or imbalance. This study will expand on this gut microbiome research by testing the effectiveness of a potential natural medical food product containing pre and probiotics to manage RA inflammatory symptoms like swelling, joint pain, and stiffness through diet. The capsules are gluten free and vegan. The pre and probiotics that make up the study test product are all naturally occurring in fruits and vegetables. The gut microbiome strains include a Lactobacillus brevis, a Lactobacillus harbinenesis, a Lactococcus lactis, and a Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Other components include Oligofructose and dried blueberry powder.
What Is Clinical Research?
Clinical research is the process of developing potential treatments for diseases. Medicines must pass through clinical trials to ensure their safety and effectiveness.
